Questions about carry-on baggage allowances abound.
Between fare classes and membership tiers and whether you’re travelling domestic or international, navigating the rules and regulations is a minefield.
If you’re flying with Qantas either domestically or internationally there are certain rules to remember no matter the class or destination.
As well as satisfying dimension requirements, your carry-on baggage always needs to fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead locker; not exceed carry-on baggage allowances; and not include any of the standard list of dangerous goods.
It's at Qantas’ discretion to require you to check your baggage at the gate (often for a cost) if it doesn’t satisfy the requirements.
Carry-on Baggage Limits – Domestic and International
Carry-on baggage allowance rules limits apply to adults and children (except infants) flying on all Qantas and QantasLink operated flights. Dash 8 aircraft have their own limits that apply domestically.
Australian domestic
For all classes on Qantas domestic flights (except Dash 8 services) the carry on baggage limits allow one piece up to 10kgs or two pieces up to 14kgs total. Dimensions and details of multiple pieces are pictured below.
Tip: To calculate the total dimension of your baggage, simply add together the height, width and depth of the bag.
1 x 115cm bag = 56cm + 36cm + 23cm
Up to 10kgs.
OR
2 x 105cm bags = 48cm + 34cm + 23cm
One piece up to 10kgs; 14kgs total.
OR
1 x 105cm bag = 48cm + 34cm + 23cm
+
1 x 185cm non-rigid garment bag = 60cm + 11cm + 114cm
One piece up to 10kgs; 14kgs total.
Australian domestic Dash 8 services
For all classes on Dash 8 services, one piece up to 7kgs with total dimensions (48cm + 34cm + 23cm) of 105cm is allowed.

For all flights and classes, both domestic and international, passengers may also carry onboard one small personal item including a handbag, laptop computer, overcoat, small camera, a reasonable amount of reading material or a small amount of duty free goods (where permitted).
Other things to remember when packing your carry-on baggage:
- You should take all essential prescriptions and medications on board with you.
- Keep it light; not only do you need to be able to handle your bag easily yourself but there could be lengthy walks between gates and terminals. Plus, cabin space is limited.
- Always pack valuables and fragile items carefully.
- Batteries and powerpacks should always be packed in your carry-on. Check with your travel expert or ground staff if you have any questions.
Children and infants
Children’s carry-on baggage allowances are the same as adults. Infants food and nappies required during a flight may be carried in addition to their own.
