More than two and a half years after Japan first closed its borders to international tourism, we’re about to see some major updates to these restrictions. That’s right! Get ready to eat sushi and tempura in Tokyo, experience a tea ceremony in Kyoto and walk amongst the cherry blossoms on your next holiday to Japan.

Update To Japan’s International Travel Restrictions

Japan has been gradually easing its border restrictions over the past few months, but the latest updates, which will come into effect from 11 October, will make it much easier for travellers to visit from overseas.

From 11 October 2022:

  • International tourists will no longer need to book a packaged tour to enter Japan
  • International tourists from specific countries (including Australia and New Zealand) will be eligible for visa-free travel again
  • There will no longer be a cap on the number of travellers allowed to enter Japan each day

While these updates will certainly make it much easier to visit Japan, it’s important to understand that there are still some entry requirements and travel restrictions in place. Make sure you check before you travel and remember that different rules may apply for travellers coming from different countries.

What Do You Need To Do Before Travelling To Japan?

Travelling to Japan after 11 October? You will still need to show proof that you are up to date with all your COVID-19 vaccinations to enter Japan. This means that you have received three doses of vaccines approved by the Japanese Government.

See the Smartraveller website for more information about getting your International Vaccine Certificate.

If you can’t provide a valid vaccination certificate, you will need to be able to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of your departure for Japan.

Finally, while this isn’t necessarily a requirement, we always recommend taking out an appropriate travel insurance policy at the time of booking to protect yourself from the unexpected while overseas. Visit our Help Centre for more information about booking travel insurance.
