Ecuador's dramatic volcanic landscapes and cultural richness make it an exceptional mountaineering destination that remains well off the mainstream trekking radar. This expedition takes you deep into the heart of the Andes, where soaring peaks such as Cotopaxi and Illiniza Norte set the stage for the ultimate challenge: summiting Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest mountain at 6,310m (20,702ft). These towering glaciated volcanoes are not only a climber's playground but also offer some of South America's most awe-inspiring alpine scenery, shaped by ancient geological forces and steeped in local tradition. Led by highly experienced local mountain guides, this expedition is designed for trekkers ready to take the leap into high-altitude mountaineering. Alongside acclimatisation climbs, there's time dedicated to glacier movement instruction -- helping you build confidence on snow and ice and understand the key techniques for safely navigating higher altitudes. Chimborazo is not just the country's tallest mountain; due to the equatorial bulge, its summit is the farthest point from the Earth's core, offering both a physical and symbolic high point to the adventure. This is a genuine 'step-up' experience for seasoned trekkers who want more than a trail -- it's for those drawn to altitude, challenge and alpine adventure, without needing to be a professional climber. What sets this journey apart is how it weaves Ecuadorian culture into the mountaineering challenge. Market visits to Otavalo, a vibrant centre of Andean tradition, and time to explore colonial Quito and the emerald crater lake of Quilotoa reveal a multi-faceted nation beyond its volcanic spine. Unlike many cookie-cutter climbing itineraries, we offer a thoughtful combination of mountain adventure and cultural immersion, supporting local communities and expert Ecuadorian guides who know these mountains intimately. For those in excellent shape, comfortable with altitude and looking for their first 6,000m (19,685ft) summit -- this is where the path leads higher, not just further.
