Opened in 1939, the Hotel Vancouver is a landmark structure in downtown Vancouver on West Georgia Street. Known today as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the building took 11 years to build because construction was interrupted by the depression and cost $12 million. During the 1990s the building underwent a significant restoration at a cost of $70 million to rejuvenate the structure to its unrivalled glory.
To learn about Vancouver's fascinating maritime history, head to the Maritime Museum. Officially opened in 1959, the centrepiece of the museum is the St Roch, an original vessel used for arctic exploration. Also on display is a submersible called the Ben Franklin. The overall mandate of the museum is to education people about maritime pursuits, preserve the history of future generations and inspire people on the delights of this important part of Canadian history.
