Getting Around

Planes

Planes travel from Kuala Lumpur to most of the major centres, including Penang, Langkawi and Sabah. Fares are competitive and both domestic and international services are comfortable and efficient. Check with your Flight Centre consultant about pre-booking to ensure you get the flight you need, especially during the busier holiday seasons.

Trains

Train services were upgraded in 1992 and have since proven to be a clean and economical alternative for travellers with time on their hands. Many are air-conditioned and have videos showing in first and second class.

Two main lines traverse the Malay Peninsula, from Thailand in the north to Singapore in the south. The western line hugs the coast for much of the way while the eastern line bisects the peninsula before heading for the coast at Tumpat near the Thai border.

Rail passes for 10 and 30 days are available for visitors - check with your Flight Centre consultant.

Buses

Malaysia is served by public and private bus companies that operate in different areas and as a result the standard can vary across the country. Buses are generally comfortable, reliable and inexpensive.

Along the peninsula, the east coast is less congested and therefore faster although the roads suffer when the rains come. On the west coast, the roads are busier but this has improved in recent years due to improved highway construction.

In Sarawak and Sabah some roads are rough and can become impassable during the wet season.

Taxis

Special cabs called 'outstation' taxis travel between many towns and cities. Prices are for the distance to your destination rather than on the meter and can be bargained down.

Within cities, it is possible to hire taxis for a day or half a day - a great way to do some sightseeing in comfort.
